Five Steps to Strengthen Environmental Safety in Ukraine<\/strong><\/h1>\n

The topic of environmental security cannot be overestimated because it is also national security. The environmental consequences of the war have long been a factor not only in national but also in regional security. The fighting has caused large-scale air, soil, and water pollution. According to the Ministry of Environmental Protection, as of the beginning of 2025, more than 7,000 environmental crimes have been recorded. The total estimate of the damage to our environment exceeds $70 billion, but it is currently impossible to determine this damage for certain, and the impact on ecosystems, biodiversity, climate stability, and public health will be felt for decades to come.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a>Russian attacks on our chemical and energy companies, artillery shell explosions, destruction of equipment, fires at industrial facilities and ammunition depots result in emissions of large amounts of toxic substances and heavy metals such as lead, copper, zinc, nitrogen oxides, sulfur dioxide, benzo(a)pyrene, etc. As a result, more than 40 % of agricultural land in the East of Ukraine is currently very toxic, and most river systems in the region are polluted.<\/p>\n

According to Ukrainian environmentalists\u2019 research, in areas of active combat actions, the concentration of lead in the soil exceeds the permissible limits 10 to 17 times. Such contamination has a high risk of migration to groundwater. And the burning of military equipment and ammunition explosions are accompanied by the release of dangerous particles of metals, plastic, fuel, and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons with carcinogenic effects into the atmosphere. Such particles can get deep into the lungs and accumulate in the human gastrointestinal tract. In addition, uncontrolled dumping of garbage and toxic waste is taking place in the occupied territories without any regulations. These threats are not local. The migration of harmful substances in the air, water and food affects the health of millions of people.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a>The flooding of mines in the Donbas, in particular, the most egregious was the flooding of the Yunkom mine, where an underground nuclear test was conducted in 1979, has become a huge threat to the ecology of the entire region. As a result of such actions by the occupation administration, there is a long-term threat of radioactive contamination of underground water bodies, which can spread not only to the entire Donbas, but also beyond.<\/p>\n

Finally, the Russians\u2019 undermining of the Kakhovka hydroelectric power plant dam in June 2023 caused an environmental disaster and led to the destruction of the entire ecosystem. Contaminated water flowed into the Black Sea, worsening its ecological condition. The destruction of the Kakhovka hydroelectric power plant resulted in tons of silt, chemicals, fuels and lubricants being dumped into the River Dnipro, causing unprecedented damage to the ecology of the entire Black Sea region. As a result, we are facing large-scale, long-term and dangerous threats to our country, which will negatively affect the health of the nation and the biodiversity of Ukraine.<\/p>\n

What should we do in this situation?<\/h3>\n

Firstly<\/strong>: Ukraine must continue its integration into the European environmental monitoring system, strengthen the network of local pollution measurement stations and record all Russia\u2019s environmental crimes using satellite data, mobile laboratories and field research.<\/p>\n

Secondly<\/strong>, it is necessary to organize an international legal assessment of military environmental crimes. Ukraine is already working closely with the UN, UNEP, and the European Environment Agency to collect evidence and file cases with the International Criminal Court.<\/p>\n

Thirdly,<\/strong> a long-term program for ecosystem restoration should be developed using satellite monitoring, GIS analytics, and bioindicator techniques with the participation of the international scientific community. Such a program should include the rehabilitation of polluted soils, reforestation, and restoration of the hydrological balance.<\/p>\n

Fourthly<\/strong>: Ukraine should rely on international support and initiate the creation of a separate fund to eliminate the environmental consequences of the war in Ukraine, involving experts from UNEP, the OSCE, and the Global Environment Facility for ecosystem restoration.<\/p>\n

Fifthly<\/strong>, it is extremely important for us to integrate environmental security issues into the defense and reconstruction sector. Green reconstruction should become a part of the post-war plan, not just as an add-on, but as a basic principle.<\/p>\n

But for all this to work, we need to convey to the world that the war in Ukraine is not just a humanitarian and security crisis. It is an environmental war. And we even have a special term \u2013ecocide, which is being carried out in Ukraine, and it covers everyone, from the Danube Delta to the Carpathians and further to the Balkans, the Black Sea and Central Europe.<\/p>\n
