“For us, for Buryats, to be saved, we need to escape from this prison of nations called Russia. We have no other options.”<\/h1>\n

I represent the Committee for the Independence of Buryatia. Using Buryatia as an example, I will tell you how we are being destroyed and why for us, Buryats, independence is also a matter of survival as a nation, as a people.  We often hear, and it’s no secret, that they are trying to turn us into these, you know, savage aborigines. I mean the Kremlin’s propaganda. They are trying to pin some atrocities on us, to show us as some kind of savage natives who are beyond civilization. We often hear the question: why are Buryats fighting on the wrong side? You have your own culture, your own territory, your own republic.<\/p>\n

I would like to say that few people can imagine such repressions as the Buryat people experienced, and not only the Buryat people, but also other indigenous peoples. This is also because many archives have been classified. We know neither our true numbers nor what really happened. But, of course, as in any culture, some secret history is passed down from grandparents to descendants. So, I will say that among those who are fighting in Ukraine on the side of Russia, there are probably few who know that for Buryatia itself, the war with the Russian invaders, when they came to our lands, lasted about one and a half hundred years (138, to be exact). This is all recorded in the reports of European scientists and travelers. And our people do not know about it!<\/p>\n

 For 300 years we have been part of Russia, and almost all these years Buryatia has experienced the most brutal genocide. That is, we were exterminated. For example, we can compare that a hundred years ago both Buryats and Mongols were approximately the same number. We were absolutely identical, well, not absolutely, but at least very close in terms of culture, language, national costumes, traditions, etc. A hundred years later, there were 3.5 million Mongols, and 400,000 Buryats, as before. But a hundred years ago we had 300,000 Buryats and 500,000 Mongols. That is, the number of Mongols increased fivefold, right? And the question is: why didn’t the number of Buryats increase then? First of all.<\/p>\n

Second, we live on a very rich land. It has already been said here that Lake Baikal is 20% of the world’s drinking water. We also have gold, uranium, coal, and jade. We could cover the entire annual budget of our republic with revenues from jade alone. It amounts to 108 billion dollars. And the Russians mine jade and sell it to China for $156 billion… And the whole business belongs to Moscow oligarchs…<\/p>\n

Why don’t we believe in Russia’s wonderful future? Because on the example of Buryatia, on the example of one nation, we can see how Moscow is actually destroying us. Because we have a lot of natural resources.<\/p>\n

How is this being done? First, here is what Putin did after the collapse of the Soviet Union and how it affected our republic. First, Moscow appoints its own head to lead the republic. Then the Russians destroy all Buryat business, meaning big business. Then they separate two very large regions: the west of Buryatia and the Aginsky district, the east of Buryatia, cut them off and assimilate them, so to speak, integrate them into other Russian regions, into other regions. As a result, Buryats are fleeing to the capital of Buryatia, Ulan-Ude. On the one hand, this increases the number of Buryats in Ulan-Ude, but on the other hand, people are unemployed and looking for work.<\/p>\n

Since all business has been destroyed, where are our people forced to go? To the army, we have a lot of military units. That is, it was originally planned this way. Since Buryatia is a strategically important object for Russia, prisons and military units were built here. They say that the border with Mongolia is close by. And we also have the Trans-Siberian Railway. That is, Buryatia is actually a thorn in Russia’s side, right? Well, or Russia is a thorn in Buryatia’s side, it’s a matter of who has what. Because if Russia doesn’t have the Trans-Siberian Railway, which passes through Buryatia, then half of Russia is cut off, i.e. Yakutia, the Far East, i.e. half of the empire, right? And Russia is no longer an empire at all.<\/p>\n

Because the land is so rich in resources, because of its location next to Mongolia with its great Mongolian history (it should be noted that it once conquered half the world), the Kremlin’s attention has always been very focused on Buryatia. That is, we have always been monitored, both in terms of our numbers and our protest potential. And, as I said, military units and prisons were equipped.<\/p>\n

So what should people do who came to Buryatia when these Buryat districts from the west and east were being torn away from us? Naturally, those who came to our republic were looking for work. Some of them went to work as a watchman, while the rest were employed under contract as military officers. Although Buryatia is a very resource-rich republic, it is one of the last places in terms of living standards. It is no secret that we live below the poverty line. People are all in debt, everyone has a lot of loans. And I believe that this is another reason why Buryats were forced to go to this war.<\/p>\n

By the way, our language is already on the UNESCO list of endangered languages. So, for us, for Buryats, in order to save ourselves, we need to escape from this prison of nations called Russia. We have no other options. Therefore, of course, we are for independence and for the elimination of the project called Russia, which was conceived as an empire and expansion since the time of Ivan the Terrible.<\/p>\n
