America: the Interests of Business and Power

The provocative statements made by the newly elected US President Donald Trump

The provocative statements made by the newly elected US President Donald Trump regarding Canada, Greenland, and NATO have caused significant socio-political resonance. Naturally, such public remarks from the leader of the world’s most powerful country could not go unnoticed by international experts and politicians. However, it is worth noting that there has been no official response from the diplomatic institutions of the countries mentioned in Trump’s speeches to his evidently provocative statements.
This is because, until Trump officially assumes office as President of the United States, all his statements can be regarded merely as the opinions of a private individual. Yet, it is important to draw attention to another crucial detail. Today, one can speak of two Americas. One is America as a state, and the other is America as a corporation.
When we refer to America as a state, we primarily mean its political and legal system, known as the “system of checks and balances,” which creates conditions to prevent power usurpation and the establishment of a dictatorship. This system has allowed the country to maintain civil peace and socio-political stability over a prolonged period.
On the other hand, one cannot ignore the fact that big business exerts a significant influence on socio-political processes in America.

“What’s good for General Motors is good for America.” This famous statement by former General Motors president Charles Wilson, made during Senate hearings in 1952 when he was being appointed US Secretary of Defense, has become a classic, as it accurately reflects the relationship between state power and business in America.
Of course, the interests of business and government in America do not always align, and this occasionally leads to crises. However, for several centuries, America has successfully overcome such challenges and continues to maintain its leading position in the world.
It is hoped that once Donald Trump officially assumes office as President of the United States, he will transition from the role of a businessman to that of a statesman and politician. In doing so, his statements and actions are expected to become more cautious and measured, as they will represent the official position of the United States with all its political and international legal consequences.
Now, regarding Trump’s promise to quickly end the war in Ukraine. Most likely, after January 20, once in the position of US President, he will act in a more rational, consistent, and pragmatic manner. The United States cannot afford Ukraine’s defeat in this war or the creation of a new Russian empire at its expense, as this would not align with America’s interests.
Therefore, Donald Trump and all senior US officials will make every effort to counter America’s global competitors on the international stage and to restore the considerable loss of authority America has experienced during Biden’s presidency.
